Kurs Understanding Dark Patterns

How websites, apps and online shops manipulate their users
Laura Laban

Laura Laban MA, BSc

On our daily journeys through the internet we encounter numerous patterns on websites, apps and online shops. These patterns ease the use so that we are able to navigate through interfaces we have never used before in order to enjoy a better user experience. However, some patterns are created with the intention to manipulate or trick users. These so-called dark or deceptive patterns are implemented to take advantage of vulnerabilities in the human mind. This happens e.g. by hiding options, forcing certain behavior, or creating artificial shortages.

This course will focus on the different classifications of dark patterns, the ethical implications of the usage and the current research with an eye on future developments with the rise of AI. Participants will learn how to identify dark patterns in their daily online activity to become more conscious of the topic and not to fall for these patterns in the future.
