Wir laden Sie herzlich zur feierlichen Eröffnung der ditact_women’s IT summer studies 2025 am Montag, den 25. August 2025 ein.

Die Veranstaltung findet im Techno_Z Salzburg Itzling, Universität Salzburg, Jakob-Haringer-Straße 2, Fachbereich Computerwissenschaften, Hörsaal T01 statt.

Title: Making and Empowerment

If you could make anything yourself, which idea would you bring to life? Maybe “shitty robots,” a talking quilt blanket, or wheelchair golf balls? These are all creations by makers that might not be useful for everyone, but they demonstrate how personal definitions of “usefulness” can be empowering.This keynote discusses the Maker Movement and its promise of empowerment. In theory, “smart” tools (like 3D printers, CNC machines, microcontrollers) should enable anyone to design and produce anything themselves. In practice, however, there is a still a long way to go to democratized manufacturing tailored to individual needs — because we still lack equitable access to digital fabrication technologies.To explore the sociotechnical tensions between barriers and possibilities within the Maker Movement, Meißner draws on examples from her research and personal practice as a maker in Austria and Northern England. She addresses diversity issues, feminist critique, and practical interventions. Most attention, however, is paid to the creativity of “untypical” makers. By connecting to diverse life experiences and values, their creations express alternative perspectives on making and reveal what exactly might be empowering about using “smart” tools.
