WHAT IS A HACKATHON

A Hackathon, or Coding Marathon, is an event in which programmers and others involved in software or hardware development, including graphic interface designers, project managers and collaborate intensively over a defined time period to create their own technology. Hackathons provide a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology. People with technical backgrounds and with social interest come together, form teams around a social problem or idea, and collaboratively code a unique solution from scratch — these generally take shape in the form of prototype, websites, mobile apps and robots.

GOALS

DITACT Women IT Studies are organizing the first-ever Hackathon Weekend. This hackathon aims to demonstrate the role of informatics in solving the current needs and assessment gaps for empowering women in getting an informatics career. This is open to all women participants who are curious and would love to know how to create an application. No programming skills needed but at least participants are curious and eager to learn. The session is a combination of lectures and hands on prototyping experience and on the spot installation of needed apps, web accounts and at least installation of simple and basic programing tools. ALL WOMEN participants will be tasked to team up and to learn and develop at least basic prototype application (web or mobile) through a simple prototype or design, and later present the output of the last day of hackathon.

Participants will vote for the best developer solution (App, Webapplication etc.) which will be mentioned as the "Best Ditact Solution 2017" at the ditact website and will receive a honorary award certificate.

THEME

Participants will be tasked to develop an APP around the following general themes:

“App that can empower women in all fields”:

Smart Cities applications for Women

App for social impactApp for elderly people

Community and Neighborhood-location based app

App for access to health resource

Solution to ensure safety of women

METHODOLOGY

This Hackathon will foster an open environment where ideas can be shared. As such, public sector collaborative partners will encourage problem sets of interest that project participants can choose to work on, or teams can also choose to address and work on and which technologies and methodologies they wish to use, and how they wish to disseminate and share their final product. Since the programme doesn't need any technical background to join, this is more focused on ideation (generation of good idea), branding (creation of possible good content), introduction of the possible IT platforms to be used and if possible, simple creation of the product prototype of the project. Mentors will assist participants in the hackathon. This is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) event, and participants are encouraged to bring feature and smartphones, computers and tablets. Important: Bring your own Laptop!
